captain’s log
While cruising around the BVI on various charter boats, I am often asked about Necker Island. Necker Island, a privately owned resort island covering 74 acres is situated just north of Virgin Gorda and is owned by Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Records fame.
In early June I had some charter guests from Los Angeles, California on a 56-ft Horizon power boat chartered from Virgin Traders. The California group had previously arranged for a familiarization tour of Necker Island scheduled early in their trip. After breakfast on the second day we motored to Necker Island and anchored in the lagoon near the dock on the south side of the Island.  The lagoon is quite spectacular with azure blue water and breaking surf on the surrounding reefs. We were greeted at the dock by resort staff members to begin the two-hour tour.
The 14 room Necker Island resort is a balinese design of open air pavilions filled with hand-carved furniture. The great house has nine open-air rooms while five smaller open-air pavilions are scattered across the island. For the hefty price of admission, one individual or a group of up to 28 can have the run of the facilities including three freshwater pools, tennis courts, full-size snooker table, library, bar, the works!
Two "celebrations weeks" are scheduled each year where it is possible to rent an individual room and share the resort and facilities with other people. Numerous famous figures have stayed at the resort including the late Princess Diana.
Two of my week-long charters in June were on Moorings 51-ft mono-hull sailboats, each with two families sharing the boat. One of the boats was named "Black Pearl" but looked nothing like Captain Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl.
July will be busy with motor boat charters with three weeks booked already. Hard to believe but lots of families take summer vacations in the Caribbean and the summers are pretty hot in the Caribbean!
